Christ the Pantocrator

One of the most enduring images of the Orthodox tradition, depicting Christ blessing with His right hand and holding the Holy Gospel.

Theological note

Icons as witness, not decoration

The holy icon bears witness to the reality of the Incarnation. Because the Son of God truly became man, He may be depicted according to His human nature. The icon is therefore not merely religious art, nor a decorative object, but a visible confession of the Gospel.

Following the teaching of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, the icon belongs to the prayer and worship of the Church. Through line, colour, and form, it proclaims the same Christ who is preached in Scripture and encountered in the liturgy.

The icon invites the faithful not simply to observe, but to pray. It directs the mind and heart beyond the image toward the person depicted and toward the Kingdom of God revealed in Christ.
